Antisemitism – Stay In Your Lane

My name is Elizabeth Sutton, I am a proud Jew, and nothing will silence my voice. Right now, as a result of some very ignorant and powerful celebrities, the international world is experiencing the largest wave of antisemitism that I personally have witnessed in my lifetime. The conversations I am having with my friends, and the ones I am forced to have with my young children are conversations I never thought I’d have.

If you are a Jew, you already have learned throughout your lifetime that the world hates the Jews. Antisemitism is not new, but it’s not usually politically correct. It usually remains under the surface. The problem is, we just had some of the world’s biggest celebrities, Dua Lipa, Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid, The Weeknd, and many others endorse antisemitism. We are outnumbered. It has now officially become trendy to hate us. Collectively, they have 100s of millions of followers. This is what we’re up against. Our entire population is 14 million people, and most of them are staying silent out of fear. Fear of losing business, fear of getting attacked, fear of having a voice that is not popular. I cannot believe my eyes.

Last week, after reading about multiple instances in which Jews were attacked at restaurants, I had to tell my nanny and my 6 year old son that if anyone approached him asking if he was Jewish, to say NO. How scary is that? He asked why. I told him – just like a cop hated George Floyd for no reason, people hate the Jews for no reason. He asked why? I gave him my best explanation. It was the following, because otherwise I have no clue why. People don’t like successful people. People are jealous. Jews are rich and successful. The world doesn’t like that. I’m going to read one of my favorite quotes from Mark Twain, which I feel sums it up best.

”…If statistics are right, the Jews constitute but one percent of the human race. It suggests a nebulous dim puff of stardust lost in the blaze of the Milky way. properly, the Jew ought hardly to be heard of, but he is heard of, has always been heard of. He is as prominent on the planet as any other people, and his commercial importance is extravagantly out of proportion to the smallness of his bulk. His contributions to the world’s list of great names in literature, science, art, music, finance, medicine, and abstruse learning are also away out of proportion to the weakness of his numbers. He has made a marvelous fight in this world, in all the ages; and had done it with his hands tied behind him. He could be vain of himself, and be excused for it.

The Egyptian, the Babylonian, and the Persian rose, filled the planet with sound and splendor, then faded to dream-stuff and passed away; the Greek and the Roman followed; and made a vast noise, and they are gone; other people have sprung up and held their torch high for a time, but it burned out, and they sit in twilight now, or have vanished. The Jew saw them all, beat them all, and is now what he always was, exhibiting no decadence, no infirmities of age, no weakening of his parts, no slowing of his energies, no dulling of his alert and aggressive mind. All things are mortal but the Jew; all other forces pass, but he remains. What is the secret of his immortality?”

The secret of our immortality is that we work hard. We engrain education into our culture. We were once slaves in Egypt – hard work is in our blood. And, God clearly loves us. God loves all, but for sure God is watching over the Jewish nation, as thousands of years of history have proven that the world wants to eliminate us. You know what would happen if the world actually experiences the consequences of eliminating the Jews? Let me list you but just a few life saving medical advances and life revolutionizing technologies that wouldn’t exist for your benefit.

Pacemakers & defibrillators – you know, those things they install in your heart to save your life from a heart condition? Do any of your relatives have one? Because they wouldn’t exist without it’s Jewish inventor (fun fact, my grandfather patented them);  Lasers – you know those bar code scanners that all businesses use to conduct transactions? Also a Jew. So if you swipe those credit cards, you’re welcome; Capitalism – a Jew; Google – a Jew. And shame on Mark Zuckerberg for totally advocating in the wrong direction out of fear of public opinion of the world. Trust me, if the new Nazis come, they’re taking you away too. You’re still Jewish. Look at your last name. You don’t even need a star; Genetic engineering – one of the most instrumental discoveries in the treatment of cancer – surprise, a Jew. Stainless steel – as in, every kitchen utensil in your home. Every factory that has machinery that produces every single product you own. Wouldn’t exist without the Jews. Mathematic theories, like E=MC2, which led to the creation of the atomic bomb. Cholera and bubonic plague vaccinations – plagues that killed 10s of millions of people. A Jew. The polio vaccine. All Jews. So let it be very clear, IN A WAY THAT YOU’VE PROBABLY NEVER THOUGHT ABOUT IT BEFORE. If we die, YOU die.

And here is the thing? Do you even know what you are talking about? Israeli politics aside, what is happening now stems far beyond Israel. Jews all over the world are being attacked and are living in fear. When the Black Lives Matter movement happened, we were implored to be quiet and listen. To educate ourselves from the people who actually experience the hatred. Yet comes a movement to stand up for blatant hatred and violence towards Jews and the entire world, none of whom actually have a clue or any experience, is preaching their knowledge. WELL, I SUGGEST YOU START TO BE QUITE AND LISTEN. Violence and hatred against anyone SHOULD NOT BE TOLERATED, irrespective of politics.

Why do I keep speaking on this so loudly? Because we need to NEVER FORGET. For the first time in my life, I finally understand why I had so many assemblies growing up as a child to remind us to never forget Nazi Germany. The killing of 6 million of our people. If we don’t speak up, it WILL happen again. History repeats itself.  There are people spray painting blue stars on the sidewalks of Jewish homes in Los Angeles. Ever hear of the yellow star Jews had to wear on their clothing? This was how Nazi Germany began. Do not be ignorant. We need to put pressure on the Jewish celebrities who have millions of followers – who can actually influence this world of social media we now live in – to SPEAK UP. Influence is done through money. Boycott their brands until they feel the pain, before we really feel the pain. Support the brands that are speaking up. We are outnumbered. We need support in numbers.

I am grateful to all those reaching out, thanking me for my advocacy. I will always stand up for my convictions. I am proud of my heritage. My family were pioneers in leading the way for progression in the Jewish community. I will do whatever I can to continue down the path they started for me. If I’m a little less rich because I alienate brand partners, I don’t give a shit, because my dignity and integrity is worth more than any amount of money I’ll ever have in the bank.

Last week, I was so down about everything that is happening – I got completely distracted from my work. I got some clarity after speaking to a brilliant woman, Elena Cardone. She told me to stay in my lane, and she was right. I cannot have the negativity of the world trickle into my inner life, because then I will fail at everything. I need to stay in my lane. My company is not an advocacy brand. It is an art, design, and media company. Yet, I am still a proud Jew. I need to promote my advocacy through my lane – through my art.

Antisemitism - Elizabeth Sutton

The way in which I can continue to advocate for Israel and the Jews is through my paintings. I am starting an initiative – I would like to create 2 Judaica artworks that I’ve wanted to do for a while, one of me lighting Shabbat candles, and another rendition of the Kotel. The reason I haven’t done them is because at this point in my career, I strictly work on commissions – thank God. Developing my artwork is extremely expensive, and anything that’s not a commission is an opportunity cost. The problem is that these paintings are very expensive, and right now, I don’t have someone who has commissioned these works.

What I would like to try and do is to presell 10 prints of each artwork, $2,000 each, to offset the costs of production + opportunity costs. This will enable me to paint these works on camera for months each day, continuing my advocacy. Think of it as a very strong and passionate, recurring advertisement for the Jews. Once the painting is complete, you will receive your print, and the original will remain in my possession to sell. Additionally, I will commit 10% of all future sales of these prints to United Hatzalah & the IDF, in perpetuity. Tobi Rubenstein, from the House of Faith and Fashion, committed to the first print this morning. I need 19 more to get these both off the ground. If you are interested, please DM us ASAP. That is the best way I believe I can both stay in my lane and continue to stand for what I believe in. I hope I receive the support to make this happen. It shouldn’t be too difficult.

The other thing I’d like to do to help advocate while staying in my lane – my podcast. Thanks to Tobi Rubenstein, yet again, for sponsoring the cost to interview Bassem Eid, a Palestinian Human Rights activist, to be a guest on my podcast. This interview will provide the world with real education on the plight of the Palestinian-Israeli-Hamas conflict from someone who actually has a clue. He has our back because he knows the truth – that our common enemy is Hamas. He has dedicated his career to studying the conflict, and has experienced it himself. He IS EDUCATED. Please expect the interview to take place in the weeks to come.

Thank you for taking the time to read. I will continue to address the issue of antisemitism. Stay safe, stay strong, and be kind – even to your enemies.
