Be A Trailblazer

'Be A Trailblazer' is a one-of-one original from Elizabeth Sutton's quote series. The series has evolved through her career, and each year's quote reflects where she was in her life story that year. This piece came after her Israel advocacy, when she recognized how courageous, and how aligned with her values, she had become. Bold opinions ruffle feathers - and you only ruffle feathers when people are paying attention.

Peacocks carry deep meaning for Sutton. Her 'Angel Watching Over Me' peacock painting is one of the most important and meaningful artworks of her career. She has always loved the animal, especially the beauty of its feathers - their colors, their patterns, and a natural sheen that feels metallic, almost gold. A very dear friend once told her that the peacock has ugly feet but a beautiful tail of feathers: focus on the beautiful tail, not the ugly feet. It has become a parable for life - focus on the positive, seek the beauty, and do not dwell on the negative and imperfections. There is beauty in imperfection.

Her love of glitter, gold leaf, and texture runs through the work, layered for a super mixed media feel that is bold and funky - just like the quote, and just like Elizabeth. And there is nothing quite like the moment light captures the gold leaf and the glitter at once and the whole surface comes alive.

Acrylic paint, gold leaf, glitter, feathers, adhesive and house paint on a custom cut MDF board. Mixed media. 30" H x 46" W. One-of-one original.

It currently hangs above Elizabeth's bed as a daily reminder of her courage and boldness, and it is available for purchase to find its forever home. Whoever takes it home is surely a kindred spirit.
